It’s already tine for a flashback to Fernie. It’s such a cool town that I felt it deserved a moment.
Like most towns in Western Canada, it burnt down. In Fernie’s case, that happened twice; once in 1904 and again in 1908. By 1910, Fernie’s businesses and their buildings were firmly established; this time including a much larger portion that were brick or stone.
Many of these buildings still stand today. The main street has a very historic feeling and yet such a laid back small town vibe. Tourism has never deposited bus loads of people, which is nice.

The buildings now house a variety of businesses. I adore the bookstore there as do my grandchildren. The old stone livery stable is a high-end furniture and decor store. The bank houses a museum while another is a bar. The train station is an arts center with a theater in what was likely the goods area. The general store has 5 different shops inside. As you can see from the picture below, an excellent job has been done on the front facade.

There are a decent number of old houses, but I don’t usually walk in those areas, so I rarely get pictures of the doors. I do, though, have a nice photo of the Court House. It’s such an impressive building, and those doors have such an impact.

One of my favourite doors isn’t on a heritage building, though. It’s a 60’s cinderblock blah building on the front. The side hosts a beautiful mural, which I am certain I have featured before. The inside, well, it’s what is inside that makes it such a regular destination. The Bean Pod, curators of chocolate delights and Mayan hot chocolate.

So Fabulous Fernie meets Thursday doors on a Throwback Thursday. If only it was that easy to go back and didn’t involve a 9 hour road trip!

This looks like a beautiful place to visit. I know that sometimes it’s looking back much later on places I’ve been to that I really enjoy having been there. [Makes sense?]

Yes trip memories do sweeten as one always remembers the good stuff. Well unless there is some really bad stuff but that has never our experience here in Fernie.

You make me want to disturb the vibe a little bit and become a tourist in this town. I love it when things are reused and repurposed. Maybe after losing the town twice to fire, there’s a greater importance associated with the buildings they do have. Thanks for the tour. I do like that courthouse door (but I’d be lined up at The Bean Pod.

Ah well I disturb the vibe by going! They do rely on tourists but don’t have the volume of a place like Banff, Jasper or Whistler — thank heavens! I am glad you enjoyed the tour and thanks for hosting. And yes I do line up at the Bean Pod but I have to leave the ski hill early as they close at 4 just like the lifts. I do wish they closed at 5 as I would spend more money there!

Some great character doors, for sure Bernie. I think I have only been through Fernie once or twice on our way to and from Kelowna or Nelson. We never stopped. May have to drive through there again some day. Have a good Friday Bernie. Allan

It’s definitely way more interesting than the highway passage through town makes it look. It’s definitely out of the way and perhaps that’s why it’s not overrun. Thanks for stopping in Allan. Bernie
