A silhouette of four

Today we saw a silhouette of four; a cold four. Not a warm huggy four. Let me set the stage for this.

The silence in the house this morning felt unnatural, given the date. Today should have started with post sleep over cuddles, waffles and such birthday excitement. The usual is to have her home by 11:30 for her birthday party. But alas that tradition falls prey to the pandemic.

I miss sleepovers but especially this one. The milestone of the day we became grandparents. The day our hearts grew ten fold and learnt to melt at the mere site of the wee lass.

Instead we bundled up, loaded up her present and headed over for an outside visit. At -36 (-44 with the wind) our time outside was limited but we tried to make the most of it. We went to see the ponies and turns out we had to feed them snow marshmallows that we roasted on a stick. Then we did some GTing and then we had to clear the ice rink for some whip the GT around grampa time. Think old fashioned crack the whip but riding. Perhaps not the safest activity without a helmet and riding backwards but all’s well that ends well.

When it was time to go inside she blew us kisses and headed off to play with the train table we had made for her (well and Little Man C as well) . It was an enchanted 35 minutes that we played outside and perhaps it will hold special memories for her later in life.

There was a video call later in the day to sing happy birthday and blow out the candle and then it was back to our solitary lives.

The important thing here is that she felt our love. Her parents (aka Momma) will have pulled out the regular stops: birthday balloons, a fancy cake with a nice display and a stellar lunch all themed around Farm Fresh Four. Yesterday they delivered cupcakes to family members. Perhaps it will became special in her memory because it was different.

It felt like a silhouette of a regular birthday but I know that blessings abound even if it was a cold four. Perhaps someday she will read this record and know how much we wanted to hug her.

I have had a love of the written word for my entire life. It's no surprise that eventually I found a platform where I could write. It's random; sometimes funny, occasionally sad, maybe even at times from anger and I lean towards creative photography and hands on crafts. I have a few blogs that high light these interests.

  1. This too shall pass – but not nearly as quickly as we have all hoped!

Because of circumstances over here, I appreciate how lucky I am to capture some of those hugs you are so desperate for. I cherish each one of them.

Thank you for the gift bag – we will send our thanks when my little one is next here.

    Hugs always!

  2. We were so fortunate to have been included in the delivery of birthday goodies! Hopefully she was able to pick up mail at the Post Office sent with Love directly to her. Look forward to better times! I, like you, miss the hugs!

    1. Too cold for an outside visit though hey but the cupcakes were delicious (not that this was surprising!). Yes I miss hugs but feel lucky to still visit them.

    1. I doubt she will remember that we had to make snow marshmallows and toast them for the ponies but I wrote it so I would remember! Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  3. We are living in unusual times. And now that the virulent variants are here, we are opening up, just so we can close back down, while we await our pretty Prime Minister’s vaccine promises. We are definitely missing human contact. Thank goodness for Skype. Stay well and warm, Bernie. Allan

  4. Oh I hear you. It’s been over a year since I’ve physically been with my grands in Israel. It has been a long year with lots going on in their young lives. We are getting older and missing out. I see my NJ based crew (3 of them) quite often as we’ve seen them since the beginning – but still have to be very careful and do most things outside. (see latest post– freezing to eat outside, etc.) Take care- I think we’re approaching a return to normalcy – a different kind- but better than we are now-.

    1. I have 2 friends Lisa who haven’t even met their grandchild yet. One lives in Australia and one in California but travel isn’t open to those areas. I know how lucky I am to enjoy outside visits and that my daughter is raising outside kids! Technology is good but it’s not the same as a hug. Take care and thanks for stopping by and engaging here.
