Today my advent calendar activity jived with the my
granddaughter’s calendar. What a non surprising coincidence!
Here she is under her advent activity board holding the card for today. It stated that it was house building day — a gingerbread house with Grampa and Nan.
First up was to make the gingerbread which we did in the morning. She loves to measure and today the concept of heaping or level were focused upon. Her counting skills are spot on for a 2 3/4 year old.
Late this afternoon, once the dough was chilled and after Grampa finished work we rolled it out and cut out the shapes. She practices this regularly with her playdough.
Following a stellar supper and a sled ride in the moonlight it was time to make the icing and then construct the gingerbread house. She was very good at holding pieces while it was built.
Then she got right into the decorating. Indeed I was a little surprised how well she did. She chose these pieces on the window and attached them herself. She also chose the pink colour as well. She’s not allowed a lot of sugar but she may have eaten a few red smartie type pieces if they were “broken”.
Grampa did the roof while we focused on the windows. As I was running out of icing I tried to do a Christmas tree on the back side. It looks like a 2 year old did it! Well she did decorate it. She was quite keen to explore what all the bags of candies were and even knew what candy cane was. We turned it into the front side walk. I was very surprised at how each item ended up very symetrical, like the roof line below.
It was such a fun activity and I am quite sure it will, once again, become a family tradition. For a long time we did this very activity yearly with our children. Then on New year’s Day they were allowed to eat what they wanted. I doubt that part will happen but Grampa will step up to the plate and take one for the team! She was allowed one cookie tonight, just don’t tell Momma!
Such a delightful day and another advent calendar check mark. This one paid back to me 💯 fold!
