My husband is an engineer and has been known to forget my birthday. That is a truth as is the fact that he occasionally strikes out in the gift department but today a special package arrived that helps make up for some of those occasions.
Two posts in November Between the Crosses Row on Row and We will remember them... talked about the First World War and our exposure to the history and the sites of this conflict. I also mentioned that in England at the London Tower there was an anniversary display that was quite stunning. I have included the photo of the actual display again as it is so striking.
These poppies are all unique and hand crafted and the proceeds from the sale of them goes to veterans groups. I tried to purchase one on line and they were all sold out. I just felt that it was a moving tribute to the 888,246 individual soldiers and would be a daily reminder of what these men and women went to war for and the privileges that we enjoy. So I was extremely pleased that Ron had purchased one as a surprise for me.
A sad after fact of the first and second world wars is that the lessons didn’t seem to be learnt. The political world seems like it is going to implode what with Russia invading the Ukraine, Syria and the whole middle eastern conflicts that rage on and on, the African issues that seem to be gathering force and now the civil unrest in the US and then add in North Korea and terrorism. We aren’t isolated here in Canada although we do feel safer than a lot of other places but any one of these conflicts can have world wide implications.
PS He also surprised me on our 30th anniversary with a wonderful string of pearls so I have to give him credit where credit is due!
